New Japan held its annual “CAMP ZAMA CAMPFEST” yesterday at the U.S. military base Camp Zama. Once again it was a huge success with lots of American fans which led to a unique atmosphere such as Naito being the bad guy against King Fale and Honma likewise against Lance Archer. Akebono made a special appearance in the main event while four joshi puroresu legends kicked off the show in an OZ Academy Offer Match.

NJPW “NEW JAPAN PRO-WRESTLING IN MIYAKO FISH MARKET ~ EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE CHARITY”, 10/15/11
Miyako Fish Market

1. Tetsuya Naito beat King Fale (11:35) with a Stardust press.
2. Minoru Suzuki, TAKA Michinoku Kaientai Dojo & Taichi beat Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma & Ryusuke Taguchi (18:27) when Taichi used a huracanrana on Taguchi.
3. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Tiger Mask & KUSHIDA beat Shinsuke Nakamura, Toru Yano, Jado & Gedo (18:55) when Tanahashi used the High Fly Flow on Gedo.

Hiroshi Tanahashi makes his V9 defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Title at “POWER STRUGGLE” next month against the man who stole it from him yesterday, CHAOS’ Toru Yano. Tanahashi had accepted a challenge from IWGP Heavyweight Title defense record holder Yuji Nagata before Yano attacked Tana and ran off with his belt, in doing so luring the ace of New Japan into agreeing to a title match against the super-heel. The show name is fitting as four title matches have been announced and all have a theme of New Japan army vs. rival faction. In addition to Tanahashi vs. Yano, CHAOS’ Masato Tanaka makes his V1 defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Title against old rival Hirooki Goto who he had a lengthy series of matches with not so long ago.

Prince Devitt makes his V2 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title against TAKA Michinoku, who challenged Devitt unsuccessfully in February during the Irishman’s previous reign. And new IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions, Davey Richards & Rocky Romero, make their V1 defense against Tiger Mask & KUSHIDA. KUSHIDA has yet to hold a title in New Japan while Tiger Mask, once the dominant ace of the division, hasn’t held any IWGP gold since losing the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title at the beginning of 2010. TenKoji collide again as old friends and rivals Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima have another singles battle, going into this match 1-1 after recent matches.

Also announced today were full G1 Tag League cards. New Japan also runs a charity show on the 15th at the Miyako Fish Market for victims of the earthquake earlier this year. This will be free admission and will have just a few matches.

9. Special Singles Match: Minoru Suzuki beat Togi Makabe (13:15) with a Gotch-style piledriver.
10. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) beat Tetsuya Naito (29:19) with the High Fly Flow (8th defense).

* Tanahashi edges ever closer to Nagata’s defense record of ten by defeating G1 Climax runner-up Tetsuya Naito in a scintillating half hour main event at Sumo Hall. Naito continued to show he is now a threat to the upper echelon of New Japan but not quite there yet, pushing Tanahashi before succumbing to the High Fly Flow. Nagata himself appeared after the match and issued a challenge that Tanahashi seemed to accept before Yano appeared and hit Tana with a chair before running off with his belt.
* Minoru Suzuki downs Makabe with his patented Gotch-style piledriver and moves into contention for Tana’s IWGP Heavyweight Title. Suzuki’s sworn friend Yoshihiro Takayama showed up after the match and delivered an Everest German suplex to Makabe.
* Former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, Masato Tanaka, adds another international themed belt to his collection by defeating founding IWGP Intercontinental Champion, MVP, to become just the second holder of the recently established title in its history. Tanaka’s long-time rival Hirooki Goto issued a challenge after the match.
* Satoshi Kojima makes his formal return to New Japan as an affiliated wrestler for the first time in nearly a decade and avenges his G1 Climax loss to sworn friend and former tag partner Hiroyoshi Tenzan.
* Apollo 55′s record-breaking third reign as IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions that lasted close to ten months finally comes to an end as gaijin tandem Davey Richards & Rocky Romero, who failed to lift the belts from Devitt & Taguchi back in May, become the 29th champions. Their win as well as Tanaka’s mean that CHAOS now have two IWGP belts in their custody after a recent title drought for the group. Tiger Mask & KUSHIDA challenged the new champions after the match while TAKA Michinoku wants a shot at Devitt’s IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title.

Below is the updated schedule for what is left of 2011 in New Japan. The big news is that following Tenzan’s successful 20th anniversary show, Satoshi Kojima will have his own on 12/14 at Korakuen, so his official return to New Japan couldn’t have come at a better time. With a big Osaka show in November this year, there won’t be one on the final tour, so the customary Aichi show will be the last major event of 2011 for New Japan.

* An emotional 20th anniversary for Tenzan which saw several returns to New Japan, including his sworn friends from the Ookami Gundan era, Masahiro Chono and Hiro Saito. This was Chono’s first in-ring appearance for the company where he became a legend since his harmonious departure at the beginning of 2010. On the other side, Nishimura returned to his old haunt after leaving the company at the beginning of 2006, while Otani also made a return although this was one of many for him since he left New Japan to help found ZERO-ONE at the beginning of 2001. Tenzan scored the win by unleashing his moonsault press on former tag partner Nishimura to seal a 20th anniversary victory.
* Keiji Muto, Riki Choshu, Tatsumi Fujinami, and others sent video messages wishing Tenzan a happy 20th anniversary.
