TenKoji’s attempt at tag domination picks up steam on October 11th, before they enter the G1 Tag League, when they challenge another strong team, Taiyo Kea & Minoru Suzuki, for the AJPW World Tag Team Title. TenKoji did win All Japan’s tag league a couple of years ago so this could be considered their belated shot.

Tne TenKoji love affair continued today in All Japan as the two teamed with KAI to beat the GURENTAI trio of Taiyo Kea, Minoru Suzuki & MAZADA, Kojima lariating MAZADA. The big story of the show, though, was Keiji Muto’s alter-ego, Great Muta, ending Suwama’s first Triple Crown reign in the main event. This means, if you consider them the same person in any way, Muto/Muta now holds both the IWGP Heavyweight Title and Triple Crown, four belts in all, somewhat remniscent of his unforgettable 2001 achievement when he was weighed down by titles. This is likely to make Nakamura’s attempt at IWGP recapture next month even more daunting and difficult.

Young lions, Yujiro & Tetsuya Naito, staged part two of their NOAH invasion today and challenged Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Kotaro Suzuki for the GHC Jr. Tag Team Title. NO LIMIT put up a great fight against their seniors, but in the end were just edged out as the most experienced of the four, Kanemaru, pinned the least experienced, Naito. It remains to be seen if they’ll be back for more, but they have an IWGP Jr. Tag shot coming up, as well as a spot in the G1 Tag League to focus on now.

He has conquered ZERO1-MAX for longer than anyone expected, winning three Fire Festival tournaments in a row and reigning as ace and champion for a long time, but now Masato Tanaka must face the one and only Yuji Nagata and see if he can really hang up there with the big boys. Tanaka overcame Kohei Sato in his latest World Heavyweight Title defense on ZERO1 soil, a match many thought could be the one where he finally let go of the belt. But a victory in close to 16 minutes meant he held on to the belt and now he is risking it against Nagata. It is now official, Tanaka will make his next defense of the title in his match against Nagata at Sumo Hall on the 13th, meaning two big singles title matches go up one after another!

A very big news day for New Japan, and we’ll start with the full 10/13 Sumo Hall card that was announced, and what a lineup this looks to be. Shinsuke Nakamura’s chance for revenge is set, as he challenges Keiji Muto for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Tenzan and Iizuka’s second Death Match follows their Lumberjack Death Match from July that Tenzan won, and this one will feature a chain. G1 winner Hirooki Goto battles RISE betrayer and gaijin ace Giant Bernard in a special singles match. Hiroshi Tanahashi, quiet since returning from injury and after having a mediocre G1, is set to head to TNA on an indefinite refresher, and his last match looks to be at Sumo Hall as he and Chono battle Nakanishi & Yoshie, the reformed monster team.

January 4th, 2009 will mark the 20th year that New Japan Professional Wrestling has run the Tokyo Dome, after the first was held on April 24th, 1989. Many trades routes with other promotions have been opened in recent times, as New Japan has worked hard and patiently to rebuild its image after lots of turmoil this decade, and President Sugabayashi wants them to put on a show worthy of the industry leader in January when New Japan runs “WRESTLE KINGDOM III IN TOKYO DOME”. Sugabayashi wants Nakamura to lift the IWGP belt from Muto and greet the Tokyo Dome in January with it to start the year fresh. The president’s plan is to run a “professional wrestling all-star” show featuring talent from all the promotions New Japan is linked to - such as All Japan, ZERO1-MAX, DRADITION, and TNA Wrestling. But magazine reports have suggested that Professional Wrestling NOAH, when while enjoying a boom, cut off ties with New Japan over a disagreement with then-president Simon Inoki, is working hard to reestablish ties with New Japan. NO LIMIT’s invasion of NOAH might be considered baby steps, but Sugabayashi has laid out his conditions: NO LIMIT come back with the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Title and we may see NOAH at the Tokyo Dome in January, as he believes a NJ/NOAH fighting environment needs some context and thinks that could be it.

For the first time since Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Jun Akiyama opened the 2003 G1 Climax, New Japan packed Kobe World Hall to the rafters today with a capacity crowd of 8,000 fans turning out to see the first ever IWGP Heavyweight Title match in the hotspot. Togi Makabe has found himself in second place so much over the past year and half, finishing runner-up in no less than three tournaments, and failing to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Each time he is in touching distance, but never gets the job done, and sadly for him, it was the same today. And yet one can’t overlook Makabe pushing Keiji Muto to his limit and beating him bloody, again coming close to winning the prestigious title. But mighty Muto continued a reign that started in April, wrapping Makabe’s own chain around his knee and hitting a Shining Wizard, then following with a moonsault press to complete a successful V3 defense. It was the man who Muto took the belt from, young superstar Shinsuke Nakamura, who appeared in the ring after the match and challenged Muto for a chance to regain what was taken from him. Muto shook hands with Nakamura and “HOLD OUT” hit, and now the rematch looks on for 10/13 Sumo Hall! TenKoji’s reunion continued with another win over GBH as they bested Iizuka & Ishii, Tenzan submitting the WEW Heavyweight Champion with his Anaconda Vice. Iizuka also used a chain in this match to torment Tenzan, and there were signs that Tenzan vs. Iizuka in a Chain Death Match could also be added to Sumo Hall.
A new threat has emerged in New Japan’s junior division. He first appeared last year as TNA superstar Senshi, then again as RISE’s new recruit earlier this year, but was injured right away. Then he returned at the beginning of this tour as a GBH member, and already Low Ki has struck gold, today ending a fairly brief fourth reign as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion for Tiger Mask. This was Tiger’s V1 defense and it went wrong as Low Ki drilled Tiger with his Ki Krusher ‘99 for the unlikely title win. Tiger Mask swore on his honour to avenge this loss and win back the belt, but another title has entered GBH custody for the time being. On the undercard, New Japan Sekigun and RISE united, as Tanahashi, Nakamura, Goto & Wataru beat the team of Yano, Bernard, Fuller & Anderson when Nakamura forced Anderson to tap out. There are signs of Tanahashi, who has been quiet since returning from a long-term injury, of heading to America for an expedition, possibly with some TNA appearances again.
